The Register: Tekton Pipelines hits beta: ‘Ragdoll Norby’ to sort continuous integration for Kubernetes

Tekton Pipelines, the major component in an open-source project for CI/CD (continuous integration and continuous delivery) on Kubernetes, has reached the milestone of beta status.

Tekton was originally Knative Build, what was then one of three major components in the Knative project, the others being serving and eventing. In June 2019, Knative Build was deprecated in favour of Tekton Pipelines. A Tekton pipeline runs tasks, where each task consists of steps running on a container in a Kubernetes pod.

DevClass: Continuous Delivery Foundation adds Screwdriver to incubation toolkit

The Continuous Delivery Foundation has recruited its first incubation project since its birth just a year ago, in the shape of container focused build service Screwdriver.

Screwdriver was originally spawned at Yahoo as “simplified interfacing” for Jenkins, before it was open sourced in 2016 and “completely rebuilt to handle deployments at scale along with CI/CD goals.”

According to the CDF, the project “ties directly into DevOps teams’ daily habits. It tests pull requests, builds merged commits, and deploys to any environment. It also defines load tests, canary deployments, and multi-environment deployment pipelines with ease.”

IDG Connect: Laying down pipelines: how the Continuous Delivery Foundation is working to simplify DevOps and CI/CD

“Looking at the latest ‘State of Agile Report’, continuous integration was the third highest cited agile practice (with 53% of organisations indicated they had implemented some for CI), while continuous delivery was fifth (with 40%). DevClass: Continuous Delivery Foundation looks to build in Microsoft, further projects

“The Continuous Delivery Foundation is looking to draw in more members and projects as it heads towards its first birthday, with Microsoft top of the organisation’s hit list.

The CDF formed back in March 2019, aiming to evangelize CI/CD as methodologies, and define/document best practices in and out of the cloud. Founder members included CloudBees and Google – it is home to the original Jenkins project, and Jenkins X, the Kubernetes-focused CI/CD platform, as well as the Google spawned Tekton.

But Tracy Miranda, CloudBees’ director of open source and a member of the CDF’s board, said the organisation had, and needed, a long list of organisations and projects it still wanted to attract, including those in direct competition to CloudBees and Google.”

Many companies focus on making new apps available for customers in the internet cloud. That way they can be updated frequently.

CloudBees provides an assembly line type of platform that speeds up software releases. Customers include Hyatt Hotels (H), Capital One Financial (COF) and HSBC Holdings (HSBC).

Sacha Labourey, chief executive of CloudBees, says online competitors are disrupting the banking industry. These rivals focus on niches, like home loans.

“We don’t see any business shielded from software innovation,” he said. “It’s a new way to compete and it’s redefining many industries.”
