Simplified approach for building container images, built on Tekton
San Francisco, August 3, 2021 – The Continuous Delivery Foundation (CDF), the open-source software foundation that seeks to improve the world’s capacity to deliver software with security and speed, today announced that Shipwright has become an Incubating Project under the CD Foundation.
Building container images reliably, securely, and efficiently is an increasingly key function of a modern cloud native delivery pipeline. With Shipwright, developers get a simplified approach for building container images, by defining a minimal YAML that does not require any previous knowledge of containers or container tooling. Shipwright is built on Tekton, a current CDF project.

“Joining the CDF is an important milestone for the Shipwright community. As a co-founder of Tekton, one of the founding projects of the CDF, I believe that CDF is the right place for Shipwright to get to v1 and, more importantly, to grow beyond that,” said Jason Hall, Red Hat Senior Principal Software Engineer and Shipwright contributor. “We believe Shipwright will become an important tool in the continuous delivery ecosystem. Shipwright tries to do one thing well: build container images. It’s not a swiss army knife, it’s a hammer.”
Shipwright is based on years of experience developing and operating Red Hat OpenShift Builds as part of the Red Hat OpenShift platform, with contributions from the IBM Cloud Code Engine team. Shipwright powers IBM Cloud Code Engine container image builds.

The CD Foundation provides a wide range of services to support open source projects, and projects begin the process as an Incubation Project. This is for projects that are interested in reaching broad adoption and have identified a growth plan for doing so. Projects receive mentorship from the CD Foundation Technical Oversight Committee (TOC) and are expected to actively develop their community of contributors, governance, project documentation, and more.
